After a week off for spring break, the Mathews High School track and field teams are hoping to come back strong. The week before break, the boys’ team decisively got its first win, bringing its record to 1-4. The girls’ team could not pull out the win that day but performed very well and now has a 3-2 record.
This afternoon, the team travels to West Point for its weekly meet and returns Saturday morning for the West Point Invitational. This, however, is more than just a meet; it is the unofficial Tidewater District championship.
With the recent reconfiguration of VHSL school alignments and classifications, the Tidewater District is no longer officially recognized. However, this does not quell old rivalries between the former district teams.
The weather forecast looks stormy for today and threatens to cancel today’s meet. Even so, the teams have another chance to get back on the track this Saturday.
