Mathews track teams compete at West Point

The Mathews High School boys’ and girls’ track teams traveled to West Point twice last week. The squads went to West Point last Thursday for a regular weekly meet, returning on Saturday to compete in the West Point Invitational.
On Thursday, the boys’ team won but the girls did not. On Saturday, the girls placed last, while the boys tied with King and Queen for eighth place. The performance of both the girls’ and boys’ teams may have been adversely affected as many of the athletes were not able to attend due to SAT testing and prom preparations.
The first visit to West Point last week was threatened by a forecast for rain, but the weather held out for the duration of the meet. Individually, Justin Adams won the 3200 meter run with a time of 10:34 and the boys’ 4x400 meter relay team won with a time of 3:57.
