After qualifying in their respective events at the Tidewater District meet last Wednesday, representatives of the Mathews High School Track team went back to West Point to take part in Friday’s Region A Championships.
Facing off against teams that they had encountered previously, such as King William and West Point, and teams outside the district, such as Nandua, Sussex Central, Franklin and Arcadia, the boys pulled off a fourth-place finish with 37 points, just short of Sussex (41 points) and Middlesex (43 points), but far behind the winning team from Northumberland (77 points), while the girls took ninth place with 20.33 points, with King William winning the regional title.
For the girls, senior Mariah Davis captured a close fifth-place finish in the 400m with a time of 1:07.94.
