Mathews track athletes compete at West Point meet

The Mathews High School boys’ and girls’ track teams traveled to West Point last week to challenge athletes from Essex, Rappahannock and West Point.
Essex swept both the boys’ and girls’ contests, while the Mathews boys placed second and the MHS girls came in third. Mathews had a strong showing on the track, but Essex dominated in the field, winning nearly every event.
MHS boys came in first and second place in the 100-meter dash, with Cody Kelly winning and Marcus Robinson a close second. The Mathews boys also won the 4x400 meter relay, the 3200-meter run and the 4x800 meter relay. Rileigh Betz won the 100-meter hurdles for the girls and Mariah Robinson won the high jump.
This week is the first of the 2014 track and field post-season. Both conference and regional meets will be held at Charles City High School, with the state finals at Radford University.
