The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team captured the Tidewater District team title by defeating West Point 9-0 last Thursday.
At number one, Aly Collins came out strong to defeat Sarah Sheffield, 6-4, 6-1. Playing very well at number two, Amy Collins cruised through her match to defeat Jane Hagen 6-1, 6-0. Leanne Moughon, playing number three, had a tough first set but battled hard to win against Delaney Beattle, 7-5, 6-1. Coaches LaDonna Crain and Chandler Rogers coached her through the first set win and were very proud of Moughon’s determination to win.
At number four, Mercedes Wells crushed Tia Lee, 6-0, 6-0, with powerful topspin shots. Kate van Emmerik, at number five, also powered over F. Hodges by winning, 6-0, 6-0. Number six, Carlyn Tillage played very well and won against Lindsay Williams 6-1, 6-2.
