The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team dominated the Bruton Panthers at home last Thursday by a score of 8-1.
The Lady Devils all played smart, consistent singles matches, not allowing any losses. At number one, Elizabeth Ransone played a very strong match never giving up, earning an 8-2 win over Sydney Wojcieszak. Kate van Emmerik swept her opponent, Alexis Ferebee, winning 8-0 at second-seed singles. At number 3, Morgan Johnson defeated her opponent, Sasha Morris, 8-2. Ashley Hudgins won a very close match at number 4 against Johanna Volk, 8-6. Alexis Wells (5) played strong with lots of topspin and won her match, 8-2, against Natalie Cross. Rachel Stewart (6) also played well to post another win for the Mathews team over Libby Brici, 8-4.
The girls continued to play strongly in doubles. However, Ransone and van Emmerik fell, 4-8, to Bruton’s number-one doubles team, Wojcieszak and Morris. Johnson and Hudgins won, 8-2, playing aggressive net play at second seed double...
