The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team improved its record to 9-2, following wins over New Kent and Tidewater District foes Middlesex and West Point. The team lost just one match in district play topping Middlesex, 9-0, and West Point, 8-1.
The Lady Blue Devils played at New Kent April 2 and pulled off a team win, 5-4. In singles at number one, Aly Collins had to forfeit to Claire Morris due to shoulder trouble. Amy Collins was out so Kasey Lynn Lyerly played two losing to Britta Vanderpoorte, 6-1, 6-3. At three, Mallory Hurst earned a victory 6-0, 6-3 over Katie Ilch. Playing four, Mercedes Wells went 6-4, 0-6 and then defeating Cassie Drain, 10-8, in the third set tiebreaker. Lamar Saunders, five, lost, 6-1, 6-1. At six, Leanne Moughon defeated Brianne Wayman, 6-4, 6-4.
