The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team competed in its first scrimmages of the spring season. On March 2, the MHS girls traveled to Poquoson to face the 2A ladies who defeated the Lady Devils, 5-4.
First in the singles lineup, Avery Betz played Kristen Kopczynski in the first match of the season taking a loss to Kopczynski, 8-4. In the second seed, Caroline Evans played Jessica Washburn and had an incredible comeback to win her match. She was down, 4-7, but played with determination to take the win of 9-7. Number three, Connie Johnson dominated Avery Baker in a swift but fierce match, 8-1. Alex Mills, at fourth seed, played hard but fell to Mireya Galacgac in a tight match by a score of 9-7. Mathews’ number five Caroline Bray started her season strong with a win over Ella Cook, 8-1. At number six, Kylie Berry battled hard but lost, 8-2, to Ava Cook.
