The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team dominated its match against the Middlesex Chargers last Wednesday at home, sweeping the Chargers, 9-0. The following day, the team defeated Rappahannock, 6-3, to give the team a 1-0 record in conference play, 5-1 overall.
The Lady Devils came out strong in singles play against Middlesex, with Elizabeth Ransone (#1 seed) beating Tamera Cook, Kate van Emmerik (#2) defeating Marry Kiku, Morgan Johnson (#3) defeated Lilly Poulson, and Ashley Hudgins (#4) defeated Amerbly Blakely, all posting final scores of 6-0, 6-0. Alexis Wells (#5) and Rachel Stewart (#6) swept their matches 8-0 against Sarah Tate and Bryana Rios, respectively.
The girls continued to dominate competition in doubles play against the new Middlesex team. Ransone and van Emmerik won their match 6-0, 6-0 against Cook and Poulson at number one.
