Mathews tennis defeats Bruton

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team is still on a roll, defeating AA opponent Bruton last Tuesday, 7-2.

In singles play, Aly Collins at first seed and Amy Collins at second took the only two losses for the team. Nicole James defeated Aly Collins, 8-5, and Sarah Reinagel won against Amy Collins by default because of illness.

At number three, Kasey Lynn Lyerly played well and easily won, 8-2, over Amber Baum-Lopes. Stepping up to four, Mercedes Wells defeated Lizzie Adams, 8-1. Leanne Moughon played fifth seed and won 8-4 against Emily Flanagan. Playing number six, Lamar Saunders played well to defeat Nanona McCue-Gomes, 8-2. Mallory Hurst who plays number four is out for now due to an injury but is expected to return to play this week.

Aly Collins and Wells teamed up for number-one doubles and played very well to win a close one over James and Reinagel, 8-6. Lyerly and Moughon played very well to defeat Baum-Lopes and Rachel Lankford, 8-0. Lamar Saunders and Kate va...
