While the Mathews High School girls’ tennis team didn’t end up with a state championship trophy this year, the Lady Devils put together a remarkable season—with the team, as well as the top-seeded singles player and doubles partners, all advancing to the VHSL Group 1A State Tournament.
MHS tennis has been to the VHSL State Championships for 12 of the past 13 years under head coach LaDonna Crain. However, this was only the second time that the team, singles and doubles all made it to the top four in the state.
The team semifinal was played last Tuesday, June 6 at Radford High School. The Mathews girls fell to Radford, 5-0. Number-one seed Maddie Brown played hard against Logan Graham, with many of the games going to deuce; however, Brown lost, 6-2, 6-0. Second seed Madelyn Johnson also played well, but went down in defeat to Mallory Wood, 6-0, 6-1.
