The Mathews County Little League Minor Softball team was honored for winning the minor division’s Virginia State Championship during an awards banquet at the Steamboat Restaurant in Hartfield on Saturday night.
Sponsored by Lynne and Joe Davenport of Mathews, the banquet included tributes from MLL president Billy Cook, Del. Keith Hodges (R-Urbanna), Mathews County supervisor Edwina Casey and Dr. Ben Lennon.
Cook spoke about how proud he was of the team’s dedication and fulfillment of the team motto "to the top," and Hodges presented the team with a Virginia flag that was flown at the state capital for a day. Hodges also gave each girl a copy of a commendation from the House of Delegates recognizing them as the 2012 Virginia minors champions and invited them to visit the state capitol and be recognized on the General Assembly floor.
