The Mathews High School varsity softball team shut out a visiting squad from Lancaster last Wednesday, 8-0. The girls went on to battle Gloucester in a 14-inning affair the following night, falling 5-4 (see related story).
In last Wednesday’s game against Lancaster, it took the Lady Blue Devils one turn through the lineup to get their first hit, but once they reached the top of the order for the second time, the bats couldn’t be stopped.
Mathews scored four runs in the bottom of the third to take a commanding lead, relying on steady pitching and defense to secure the win. Lindsay Collins’s pitching held the visiting Red Devils scoreless, while Mathews added four more runs to the team’s final tally.
Sharese Jarvis, Sydney Morgan and Virginia Scatchard led Mathews with two hits each. Kaitlin Eriksen, Lindsay Crigler, Sarah Burnette and Taylor Denton added one hit apiece. Mathews traveled to Smithfield yesterday to face Isle of Wight Academy.
