The Mathews High School wrestling team placed fourth out of a dozen teams competing in the Region A tournament, which was held on Friday and Saturday at the MHS gym.
Northampton won the tournament with 238 team points, followed by Washington and Lee (193 points), Arcadia (187.5 points) and Mathews (167.5 points). A total of 140 wrestlers took part in the competition.
Mathews crowned three individual regional champs on Saturday—Willie Moore (285 lbs.), C.W. Sorey (171 lbs.) and Russell Reed (152 lbs.). James Pavik (189 lbs.) placed second, while Billy Bower (160 lbs.), Matt Rouland (124 lbs.) and Caleb Miller (103 lbs.) finished third. All seven are advancing to this weekend’s state tournament in Salem.
