Superintendent of Schools Dr. David S. Daniel made a pair of presentations this month to members of the Mathews County School Board—one on student performance in a K-3 literacy screening assessment and the other on the state’s new school performance and support accountability framework.
The presentations on student achievement were made at the start of the board’s Nov. 19 meeting, which was held in Thomas Hunter Middle School’s Brooks Auditorium.
Literacy screening
Daniel briefed school board members on the fall results of the Virginia Language & Literacy Screening System. VALLSS, which is aligned with the newest reading science, is a screening tool designed to identify students who may be at risk for developing reading difficulties.
VALLSS is “a new instrument for us and across the state,” Daniel said. Students are grouped into one of three categories—high risk, moderate risk and low risk of developing reading difficulties.
