The Mathews High School boys’ and girls’ cross country teams both placed first in their season opener last Wednesday, Sept. 4, at Beaverdam Park with team total of 18 and 15, respectively.
Gavin Dustin placed first overall with a finishing time of 18:06, followed by Seth James in second with a time of 18:07 and Blake Hunley in third at 18:13.
Next for Mathews was Jaxon McDonald with a time of 18:44, followed by Zachary Salvadori (19:00), Jon Jenkins (19:01), Adam Greve (19:53), Samuel Miranda (20:17), Cole Christensen (20:26), Ivar Golden (20:27), Colin Moore (21:23), James Morgan (22:39), Lincoln Williams (23:54), Hunter Horsley (24:38) and Marvin Ouma (25:42).
For the girls, Elizabeth Moore placed first overall with a time of 23:26, followed by Lorena Carballo in second with a time of 25:16 and Paige Morris (JV) in third at 25:29.
