Mathews resident takes temporary custody of Richard III seal

Liz Bateman of Mathews has been asked to take temporary custody of the Great Seal of King Richard III after the item came up in auction in Northern Virginia.
The seal, dating to 1485 and five inches in diameter, accompanies a Grant of Lieutenancy of the castle and county of Guise to Sir James Tyrell, a loyal knight who fought many battles at Richard III’s side. It was bought at auction for approximately $5,000 by the Richard the Third Society in the U.K.
The seal will eventually be housed at the York Museum in York, U.K. Bateman is the coordinator of the Tidewater Chapter of the Richard the Third Society, American Branch. www.r3.org
