Mathews Plog-a-Thon to be held Sunday

The fifth annual Mathews Plog-a-Thon will be held along Mathews County roadways and shorelines from 1-4 p.m. this Sunday. Plogging is the act of walking or jogging while picking up trash, said organizer Jan Towne of Onemo.
To join the Plog-a-Thon, participants choose an area to clean up on Sunday. It may be a stretch of road, a shoreline, a public landing, or even a ditch in front of a home, said Towne. Participants are asked to wear bright clothing and gloves. Trash bags must be disposed of by the plogger. Recycling aluminum is encouraged.
Any member of the Facebook group Mathews County Ploggers or Mathews County Talk who posts a picture of the trash collected Sunday to either of those pages by midnight that day will be entered into a random drawing for a gift certificate from a local merchant, Towne said.
Drivers are asked to be aware of the ploggers on the roadways and to give them a wide berth.
