The fourth annual Mathews Plog-a-Thon will be held along Mathews County roadways and shorelines on Sunday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
Plogging is the act of walking or jogging while picking up trash, said Jan Towne, organizer.
To join the Plog-a-Thon, participants choose an area to clean up; it may be a stretch of road, a shoreline, a public landing, or a ditch in front of a home. Participants are asked to wear bright clothing and gloves. Trash bags must be disposed of by the plogger. Recycling aluminum is encouraged.
Any member of the Facebook group Mathews County Ploggers, Mathews County Talk, or Mathews Hub who posts a picture of the trash collected on March 17 to either of these pages by midnight on March 17 will be entered into a random drawing for a gift certificate from a local merchant, Towne said.
Drivers are asked to be aware of people on the roadways and to give the ploggers a wide berth.
