A Mathews man died on Thursday as the result of a single-car accident near Foster Post Office.
Ronnie Jerome Mason, 57, was traveling west on East River Road at around 11:58 p.m. when the 2005 Mazda sedan he was driving veered off an embankment, struck a barbed wire fence and several trees, and overturned in the tree line, said Sgt. Michelle Anaya of the Virginia State Police. The accident occurred about a half mile east of John Clayton Memorial Highway, she said.
Mason was pronounced dead at the scene, said Anaya. She said that the victim wasn’t wearing a seat belt, and that both alcohol and speed were factors in the accident. This was the first traffic fatality in Mathews County in 2014.
