Mathews lighthouse keepers to be honored Saturday

Six Mathews County lighthouse keepers will be honored Saturday in ceremonies at three cemeteries, conducted by the U.S. Lighthouse Society and its Chesapeake Chapter.
A USLHS marker will be unveiled for each keeper in separate 30-minute tributes, as follows:
William Edward Davis, 9:30 a.m. at H.C. Smither Memorial Cemetery, Hudgins;
Robert Franklin Powell, 10:45 a.m., Mathews Baptist Church cemetery, Hudgins, with a lunch break;
John William Thomas, 1:30 p.m., James Temple Ripley, 2:15 p.m., Oliver R. Hudgins, 3:30 p.m., and James Beauregard Hurst, immediately following, all at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Susan.
Personnel from Flotilla 66, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, will serve as color guard with personnel from the U.S. Coast Guard Station Milford Haven serving as honor guard.
The ceremonies are open to the public.
The Chesapeake Chapter, USLHS has previously honored 19 lighthouse keepers buried in Mathews.
