Mathews hosts football jamboree tonight

The Mathews High School varsity football team did well in its first pre-season outing on Friday evening against Nandua and Bruton.

"I’m real happy with their effort and their performance," said MHS head coach Paul White. While the Devils made a few mistakes, he said, they were not complete breakdowns. Mathews outscored Nandua and ended up tying Bruton in the scrimmage.

Tonight, Mathews will host a football jamboree with Northumberland, Charles City and Jamestown, starting at 6 o’clock. Each team will play one quarter of football against the other teams. The jayvee boys, meanwhile, will host Northumberland, Jamestown and West Point on the practice fields.

Admission is $5 and the concession stand will be open. Mathews kicks off its 2010 regular season next Friday, Aug. 27, at Amelia. The Devils’ first home game is scheduled for Sept. 17 against Franklin.
