The Mathews High School crew hosted the first of its three spring home regattas at Williams Wharf on the East River. In attendance were crews from Gloucester, Great Bridge, Hickory and Norfolk Collegiate School.
Mathews rowers won three races, placed second in three others, and finished third four times.
Many new faces made up the MHS men’s varsity entries. In the first flight of the men’s varsity four, Phillip Machen, Kyle Moran, Sam Hutson, Tucker Blackwell and coxswain Brandon Smith got off to a good start but finished in third (5:00.7) behind winner GBC (4:57.0) and runner-up GHS (4:58.9), with Hickory trailing (5:23.1).
Entered in the second fight of men’s varsity four were MHS rowers Bill Riley, Gus Bauby, Matt Oliver, Dominick Cummings and cox Josh Miles. Getting off to a bad start, the boys still managed a bronze finish (5:25.5) behind winner GBC-B (4:59.5) with GHS-B second (5:03.2) and ahead of Hickory (5:23.1).
