Jaxon McDonald, a senior at Mathews High School, has been recognized as a Commended Student by the National Merit Scholarship Program.The commendation was presented to McDonald by MHS principal Dr. Andrew Greve during a special ceremony held on Oct. 2, with his mother C.J. McDonald, school counselor Katelyn Dodge, sister, and grandparents in attendance.
“Those being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” a National Merit Scholarship Program spokesperson shared in a statement. “We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”
The National Merit Scholarship Program honors students who excel on the PSAT/NMSQT tests. While Commended Students, such as McDonald, do not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships, they remain eligible for scholarships offered by corporate sponsors.
