The Mathews High School boys’ and girls’ cross country teams both placed first at the Tidewater District Cross Country meet held last Wednesday, Oct. 30, at Newport News Park. The boys finished with a team score of 21 points and the girls finished with a score of 16.
Gavin Dustin finished first overall with a time of 16:44. Chance Higginbotham snagged the third-place spot for Mathews, finishing the race at 17:13. Next for Mathews was Blake Hunley with a time of 17:17, followed by Seth James (17:23), Jaxon McDonald (17:36), Zachary Salvadori (18:22) and Adam Greve (18:26).
For the girls’ team, Lauren Johnson placed first with a time of 21:33, followed by Elizabeth Moore in second with a time of 22:16 and Lorena Carballo in third with a time of 23:15. Baylee Bell finished next for Mathews with a time of 23:41, followed by Morgan Stearns (24:26), Jordan Sadeg (24:34) and Lyla Duff (25:14).
