Mathews harriers named regional champs

The Mathews High School boys’ and girls’ cross country teams won the Virginia High School League 1A Region A Championships last Thursday at Newport News Park.
Gavin Dustin placed second overall, crossing the finish line in 16:10 (a school record), followed directly by Seth James with a time of 16:14.
Blake Hunley finished next for Mathews with a time of 16:46, followed by Salvador Cardenas (16:52), Chance Higginbotham (16:54), Adam Dustin (17:19) and Andrew Greve (17:20). The boys finished with a team score of 24. Each of the boys received All-Region honors.
Lauren Johnson finished first overall in the girls' race with a time of 19:59 (a new school record). Adelle Hudgins finished next for Mathews with a time of 20:45, followed by Lorena Carballo (22:00), Zoe Camp (23:00), Morgan Stearns (23:09), Lyla Duff (24:12) and Jordan Sadeg (25:17). The girls finished with a team score of 40.
