Mathews golf off to a 1-1 start

The Mathews High School golf team is off to a 1-1 start. After losing to a highly-rated King William team in the season opener, the Blue Devils rebounded with a win over Middlesex on Aug. 28.

"We are very young and inexperienced," said new coach Pal Jackson. Against King William, Mathews was led by juniors Jacob Jackson (42) and Dillon Roane (60) in the nine-hole competition. "No one played to their potential, but we’re just getting started and King William is a very good team," Jackson said.

 

Against Middlesex, Jackson said, "I was very proud of the much-improved scores from week one. Although Middlesex is inexperienced too, they’re not as young, so it gives the boys and me a good feeling to get the victory." The team was led by Jackson’s 40, freshman Chad Lewis came in at 53, followed by sophomore Jonathan Oliver and Roane at 55 each for a 203-205 win.
