The Mathews County Little League Junior Girls’ Softball Team won the state Little League championship Monday at Broadway, going five wins for one loss against the top teams in the state.
When the girls arrived in Mathews Monday night, they were paraded through the Court House by fire trucks and police cars with lights flashing, sirens howling, and horns blowing.
Coach Robby Sorey said he and the other coaches, Charlie Crittenden and David Miles, were proud of the girls, who went into the tournament committed to doing their best and played solid ball throughout.
“Every one of these kids contributed the entire time,” he said. “If they were bad at the plate, they made it up in the field. If someone was having a tough time, somebody picked up the slack… Everybody played at the same level.”
