The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team is off to a great start this season.
The team traveled to Richmond last Tuesday and defeated a young AAA Glen Allen team, 5-3. In singles play, Aly Collins played number one against Julie Jackson, winning a tough match 8-8, (7-3) in the tie-breaker. Playing number two, Amy Collins lost to a consistent Kinsey Donovan 2-8. At number three, Mallory Hurst played a very strong match and out-battled Emily Crawford 8-1 with long rallies. Fourth seed Kasey Lynn Lyerly played very well to defeat Madeline Blankenship 6-3. Leanne Moughon, at number five, played hard but lost to Michelle Hall 3-8. Playing number six for the match, Lamar Saunders worked very hard but lost 6-8 to Jodie Wheeler.
