The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team went into its spring break on a high note, defeating Rappahannock last Wednesday, 6-3. The win was an important one for the Lady Devils because the Raiders are expected to be one of the toughest competitors Mathews will face at the regional tournament.
The Collins twins came up with three of the victories by playing strong to win in their individual matches, as well as doubles partners. Aly and Amy Collins, playing #1 and #2 seed, respectively, defeated their opponents by scores of 8-4 and 8-5. Mercedes Wells, the MHS third seed, lost 8-4 to a very tough sophomore, Lori Gagnon, who was regional semifinalist last year. Fourth seed Leanne Moughon lost to Amanda Fallin, 8-2. At fifth seed, Kate van Emmerik played hard and won against Emily Gay 8-4 to give the team its third team win. Carlyn Tillage continued the Devils’ streak at sixth seed, winning 9-7.
