Trying to build on the success of the volleyball team, the Mathews High School Lady Blue Devils took to the basketball court.

With very little time for conditioning or practice, Mathews opened the season against three tough Northern Neck teams with a goal to return to post-season play, where they lost in the regional semi-finals last year. All three Northern Neck teams (first six games) are opponents that played in the regional playoffs last year.

Mathews went 1-2 in the first week of play, defeating Rappahannock and falling to Lancaster and Northumberland.

Head coach Allie Bridge returns for her second season along with her core players, but must focus on developing guard play. Seniors Shelby Ware, Mackenzie Moughon, Taylor Denton and Jessi Nelson return for their final season. Other returning players are juniors Hannah Rowe, Emily Brown and Whitney Eriksen.
