The Mathews County Little League Major and Minor Softball All-Star teams were continuing this week to pursue championships in their state tournaments.
Minor girls’ manager J.J. Ashberry said that, as of Wednesday morning, Mathews was the only undefeated team in the Virginia minor league championship tournament, which is taking place in Woodstock.
"Things are going extremely well," he said. "It’s been quite an experience for these young girls."
The team of 9- and 10-year-olds started off with a whopping 23-1 win against Gordonsville on Friday, followed by an exciting game against Luray on Saturday. Ashberry said the score was still tied 2-2 after the girls went into overtime for a seventh inning. But both teams had to switch pitchers, and the advantage went to Mathews, which had two good pitchers in reserve. Mathews scored nine runs in the eighth inning, for an 11-3 win.
