The Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad has done it again. For the third time the squad sponsored Super Bowl Chili Cook-Off and for the third time it was an overwhelming success.
Seven local organizations, Mathews Lions, Mathews Ruritans, Mathews Rotary, American Legion Post #83, Piankatank Ruritans, Continentals and the Rescue Squad, put their chefs to work and came up with 12 different chili dishes that would make the National Chili Society sit up and take notice. Texas, step aside: Mathews is coming up in the world of chili making.
More than 500 people bought tickets to enjoy the chili as well as the cornbread and desserts supplied by Lynne’s Family Restaurant and Richardson’s Café. The restaurants also donated beverages and tableware, for the third time.
All in all, the cooks, the patrons and the donors came together to fulfill the rescue squad’s motto “Help Us to Help Others.”
