The Mathews County Board of Supervisors, meeting last Thursday, heard a report on an employee compensation and classification study conducted by Management Advisory Group of Woodbridge in late 2024 that found Mathews employees’ salaries lag significantly behind those of other adjacent and nearby localities.
MGA Senior Advisor Steve Foster said the study, which included 76 positions in 44 job titles, compared local employees’ compensation (not including school employees) to 10 other localities on the Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck, as well as York County on the Peninsula. It found that Mathews lags behind other localities between 20 and 30 percent, with the maximum salaries lagging the most. Several positions were further behind the others, including the animal control officer, the facility manager, and most director positions.
