The 2013 Mathews High School varsity football season came to an end on Friday evening, as the visiting Middlesex Chargers edged out the homestanding Devils in the final seconds, 28-21.
Mathews (2-8) was tied with Middlesex (7-3) with about 20 seconds remaining when the Chargers scored their fourth touchdown of the game to secure the win.
It was a back-and-forth affair, although Mathews never held a lead. The Chargers went into half-time leading, 14-7, with Austin Fravel scoring the Devils’ first touchdown. Mathews running back A.J. White’s touchdown knotted the score at 14-14. After Middlesex jumped ahead again, Fravel scored his second touchdown in the fourth quarter. Jesse Ingram had a big night rushing, gaining 100 yards for Mathews. Darian Beale was a standout on defense; the Chargers had at least 4-5 holding calls as they tried to block the lineman.
"We had opportunities," head coach Ryan Wenner said, "but they made more plays than we did."
