Mathews deputy’s vehicle rear ended in accident

An accident involving a Mathews sheriff’s deputy occurred at 8 a.m. Saturday at Twiggs Ferry Road and Green Point Lane in Cobbs Creek.
According to Sgt. Michelle Anaya of the Virginia State Police, a 2015 Mazda CX5 driven by a 57-year-old Gloucester woman was traveling northbound on Twiggs Ferry Road and attempted to pass a slower-moving vehicle. The car sped up to finish passing the slower vehicle and crossed the double solid line back into the lane, then lost control and ran off the roadway to the right.
The car then struck a 2021 Dodge Charger that was operating stationary radar off the roadway in a gravel parking lot. Sheriff-elect April Edwards of the Mathews County Sheriff’s Office said that the Charger was hit in the rear and that Deputy Bryan P. Longest was trapped inside. He was taken to Riverside Walter Reed Hospital in Gloucester, where he was treated for minor injuries and released. Both vehicles are believed to be a total loss, said Edwards.
