Mathews Sheriff April Edwards recognized Deputy Bryan Longest during the Mathews Board of Supervisors’ April 18 meeting for three incidents in 2022 and 2023 in which he was instrumental in assisting patients in need.
She presented him with a life-saving commendation bar to display on his uniform, symbolizing bravery, dedication and selflessness.
Edwards recounted a call that came in the early afternoon of Aug. 21, 2022, a domestic incident with a combative person in the home who had broken several windows. When Longest arrived on scene, the person fled on foot, and Longest found the subject walking down the road, covered in blood. Edwards said Longest calmed the person down, and then applied a department-issued tourniquet to stop the bleeding from a deep laceration to the person’s right arm.
A second incident, which occurred shortly after 4 p.m. on Oct. 22, 2022, involved a suspicious vehicle reported on Little Street. When he arrived on the scene, Longest found the vehicle in gear and...
