The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team traveled to West Point on Friday, shutting out the Pointers, 9-0.
Leading the way was #1 seed Faith Lewis with an 8-6 win followed by an identical score by Chelsea Lowe at second-seed singles. Lily Jarosz rolled with an 8-1 victory at number 3. Lyla Duff rallied from a 5-2 deficit to record a 9-7 win. Taylor Wood and Liberti Carter rounded out singles play with 8-1, 8-0 victories. Doubles wins were recorded by Lewis and Lowe (8-5), Duff and Ella Ward (8-5), and Jayda Thomas and Carter (8-0).
On Monday, the Lady Devils defeated the visiting Middlesex Chargers, 6-3, in a well-contested match highlighted by a come-from-behind victory in first-seed doubles. Seniors Faith Lewis and Chelsea Lowe rallied to even the set score at 8-all and went on the take a 7-3 tiebreaker win.
Singles wins were posted by #2 seed Lowe (8-5), #3 Jarosz (8-3), #5 Wood (8-0) and #6 Carter (8-0). Jarosz and Carter also contributed in doubles with and 8-0 win at #3.
