The Mathews High School girls’ and boys’ cross country teams placed second and third, respectively, overall during last Saturday’s state meet held in Blacksburg.
Elizabeth Moore and Gavin Dustin both earned medals for placing in the top 15 in their respective races.
Moore finished 11th overall with a time of 21:52. Next for Mathews was Lauren Johnson with a time of 22:06, followed by Lorena Carballo (23:28), Baylee Bell (23:31), Morgan Stearns (24:57), Lyla Duff (25:38) and Jordan Sadeg (26:08). The girls finished with a team score of 94, only five points behind first-place finisher Auburn.
During the boys’ race, Dustin finished 12th overall with a time of 17:17. Next for Mathews was Blake Hunley with a time of 17:48, followed by Seth James (17:58), Chance Higginbotham (18:04), Zachary Salvadori (18:14), Jaxon McDonald (18:23) and Adam Greve (20:04). The boys finished the race with a team score of 89.
