Mathews cross country teams place second, third at states

CHARLIE KOENIG / GAZETTE-JOURNAL The Mathews High School cross country teams got a schoolwide sendoff on Friday morning before they took the bus to Virginia Tech to compete in the VHSL Class 1 state championships. Led by the Marching Devil band, cheerleaders and the Blue Devil mascot, the two teams were paraded through the school. Among the girls shown here (bottom left photo) are, from left, are Elizabeth Moore, Lorena Carballo, Lauren Johnson and Jordan Sadeg. Some of the boys shown here (botom right photo) are, from left, Seth James, Gavin Dustin and Jaxon McDonald. The student body then went out to the bus loop and cheered as the bus, led by a Mathews County Sheriff’s Office escort, pulled out onto the road.

The Mathews High School girls’ and boys’ cross country teams placed second and third, respectively, overall during last Saturday’s state meet held in Blacksburg.
Elizabeth Moore and Gavin Dustin both earned medals for placing in the top 15 in their respective races.
Moore finished 11th overall with a time of 21:52. Next for Mathews was Lauren Johnson with a time of 22:06, followed by Lorena Carballo (23:28), Baylee Bell (23:31), Morgan Stearns (24:57), Lyla Duff (25:38) and Jordan Sadeg (26:08). The girls finished with a team score of 94, only five points behind first-place finisher Auburn.
During the boys’ race, Dustin finished 12th overall with a time of 17:17. Next for Mathews was Blake Hunley with a time of 17:48, followed by Seth James (17:58), Chance Higginbotham (18:04), Zachary Salvadori (18:14), Jaxon McDonald (18:23) and Adam Greve (20:04). The boys finished the race with a team score of 89.
