Mathews boat building tradition commemorated

Mathews residents will be able to celebrate the county’s rich maritime history from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the fifth annual Maritime Heritage Day at Horn Harbor Marina, Port Haywood.

Organized by the Mathews Maritime Foundation, the day-long festival is meant to pay tribute to the county’s rich boat building heritage. Mathews men have earned a reputation that reaches far beyond the county’s shores as builders of quality vessels.

"Though the materials may have changed from the original pine and oak harvested here (and only hand tools), to aluminum, steel, fiberglass and carbon fiber and the addition of power tools—the end product remains a useful, beautiful vessel whether for work or leisure," said MMF spokesperson Nancy Lindgren.
