Mathews board close to finalizing cell phone policy

Mathews County School Board members are expected to finalize language of a new cell phone policy for students when the board meets today for its day-long summer retreat at the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad meeting room.
During Tuesday’s monthly meeting in the Mathews High School media center, board members agreed to the main point of the policy—that students should be prohibited from accessing their phones anywhere in school buildings and on buses to and from school—but were divided on whether they could have their phones with them at all in case they needed to contact their parents off campus at the end of the day.
The summer retreat, which is being held primarily for long-term planning purposes, will convene from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. today, Thursday, July 20, at the rescue squad building at Hudgins.
