Mathews Extension Master Gardeners held a volunteer landscaping day on Saturday at Eastbrooke Estate in Mathews, the new home of the nonprofit organization Canine Companions.
The 220-acre estate was donated to Canine Companions by the estate of the late Helen and Murray Main. Located at the headwaters of the East River, Eastbrooke is the historic homeplace of the renowned merchant mariners of Mathews who were memorialized in the 2017 book “The Mathews Men: Seven Brothers and the War Against Hitler’s U-Boats” by William Geroux.
A core group of Extension Master Gardeners assessed and prioritized what needed to be accomplished and assigned groups to four zones, said a press release. They focused on weeding, trimming, pruning, plant debris removal, and mulching the numerous long-untended garden beds around the historic homeplace.
