Mary Virginia Mauck, 89, of Toano, Va., passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, December 10, 2023, at Sentara Williamsburg Hospital. Mary was born on October 4, 1934 to Walter and Nina Sparks in Madison Co., Va. She was one of nine children; they lived the typical farm life, and she loved every minute of it. This is where she gained her nickname, Carter, from the family.
On Sept. 27, 1952, she married the love of her life, Sam Mauck. Together they had three children, Barbara, Arthur, and Marsha. Mary worked for many years as a personal care aide in Mathews County, where the family finally settled. She gained her most well-known nickname of Mum-Mum after becoming a grandmother of five. Mary lived life to the fullest, enjoyed her coffee, spending time with her family and traveling, she loved being on the go. Though she will be missed here with family, they take comfort in knowing that she is with her husband and son once again.
Mary is survived by her daughters, Barbara Callis and Marsha Farris (Mike); her sister, Edna “Pat” Gibson; her grandchildren, Brian Callis, Jason Callis (Kelly), Marie Callis (Jae), Chris Farris, Gina Ambrose (Josh); great-grandchildren, Rylee Callis, Lannah Callis, Hunter Farris, Jaclyn Callis, Londyn Callis and Brody Callis; sister-in-law, Darlene Sparks; lifelong friend, Betty Erickson, and several extended family and friends.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Nina Sparks; husband, Samuel Mauck; son, Arthur Mauck; son-in-law, Keith Callis; grandson, Shawn Farris; siblings, Hazel Fowler, Lucille Sprouse, Gene Sparks, Clarence Sparks, Helen Cason, Lee Sparks and Bud Sparks.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, December 15, 2023, at 2 p.m. at Faulkner Funeral Homes, Foster-Faulkner Chapel, Mathews, with burial to follow in Windsor Gardens Cemetery, Dutton, Va.
