Mary Mitchem Rountree of Gwynn’s Island, went to be with the Lord and her beloved Ed on Friday, April 8, 2011.
Mary was born and raised in Mathews County, lived on Gwynn’s Island, and graduated from Mathews High School in 1959. She lived in Richmond for a short while where she worked for the Virginia Farm Bureau.
Mary was a lifetime member of Gwynn’s Island Baptist Church where she loved working with the children and singing in the choir. She was also a long-time member of the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad Auxiliary.
She is survived by a step-daughter, Peggy Arutunian of Mathews; a step-son, Graham Rountree of Richmond; a grandson, Brian P. Moore and his wife Suzanne of Redart; a granddaughter, Megan Rountree and grandson Parker, Rountree of Richmond; great-grandsons, Tyler and Colin Moore and Damion and Dylon Gregory; her aunt, Margaret Baity and husband Chester of Richmond; sisters-in-law, Mildred Umphlette of Norfolk and Vivian Rountree of Suffolk, as well as a host of nieces and nephews.
The family received friends from 7:30-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13, 2011, at Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home in Mathews. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 14, 2011, at 11 a.m. in Gwynn’s Island Baptist Church with graveside service to follow at H.C. Smither Memorial Cemetery, Hudgins, Va.
