Surrounded by her family, Mary Esther Hogge, affectionately known as “Miss Mary,” of Hayes, age 87, passed to her heavenly home on April 27, 2024. Miss Mary cared for hundreds of children in her home for many years while their parents worked. She watched them grow into adults with their own families. In many instances, the children would hide their shoes and cry when their parents came to take them home. This was indeed a testament to the love they had for Miss Mary. She was a Christian and a lifelong member of Providence Baptist Church, attending when her health would permit. Husband Charles Steven “Steve” Hogge Sr.; parents, Wilson and Edna Pearl Smith, and brother, John Winfred Smith, preceded her in death. She is survived by her daughters, Cheryl Hall (Reuben) and Cindy Hogge (Danny); son, Steve Hogge (Carmen); grandchildren, Eric Hall (Jennifer), Brad Hall (Carmela), Christopher Howder (Christina), and Peyton Howder (Hieu); great-grandchildren, Brooke Hall, Jordan Howder, Destiny Howder, Colton Howder, Bella Howder, Carter Whirley, Jensen Whirley; brother, Wilson B. Smith Jr.; foster sister, Joyce Ann Smith; special uncle, CC Haywood, and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. The family will receive friends at the home of Steve and Carmen Hogge, 8079 Terrapin Cove Road, Gloucester Point, Va.
