A funeral for Mary E. Plummer, 94, of Mathews, was held at 2 p.m. Monday in Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home, Mathews. She died Wednesday, March 11, 2015.
She was born in New York City on March 27, 1920 to James P. Birch and Mary McCaffrey Birch. She served in the U.S. Navy for six years (1943-1949) as a WAVE officer. Mrs. Plummer was a teacher in private and parochial education for 15 years until retirement, and was a member of the Church of Francis de Sales and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. She volunteered with Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society, Hands Across Mathews, and Meals On Wheels.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John E. Plummer; brother, Joseph Birch, and sister, Catherine Vistica.
Survivors include her son, John T. Plummer; daughter, Susan Veremakis; five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Interment followed in Windsor Gardens Cemetery, Dutton.
