Mary Alice Harris, age 91, of Gloucester, Va., passed away peacefully on Feb. 21, 2023, surrounded by her loving family as she transitioned from her earthly home to her Heavenly home. She joins the love of her life, her husband Stewart, who preceded her in death. Mary Alice was from Severn, Va., born on May 2, 1931, the daughter of the late Darius Franklin and Ruth King Hogge. She is survived by a daughter, Kimberly Harris Garrison and husband Billy of Gloucester; two sons, Keith Harris and wife Julie of Gloucester and Stewart Harris Jr. and wife Pat of Poquoson; grandsons, Brandon Harris (Meredith), Dustin Harris (Megan), Jonathan Harris (Sarah); granddaughters, Lindsey Hall (Jason), Katelin Garrison (Ryan Chenault), Delaney Garrison (fiancé Kennon Turner), and Madeline Barrs (Colbourn), and nine precious great-grandchildren who gave her much joy, Emily, Finn, Lucy, Camden and Otis Harris; Mackena, Grace and Layne Hall and Shepard Barrs.
Mary Alice lived her entire life in Guinea within a quarter mile of where she was born. She loved her Lord, her family, her church, and her Gloucester community. She enjoyed her flowers, feeding the birds, decorating for the seasons and watching the Baltimore Orioles. She never traveled too far from home, but a place she loved to visit was Lancaster, Pennsylvania’s Amish country. This became annual spring and fall trips, coming home loaded with goodies and crafts from the Lancaster Amish. Mary Alice graduated from Achilles High School class of 1947 and was a dedicated member of Union Baptist Church for almost 70 years serving as a Sunday School teacher, Woman’s Missionary Union and Girls Auxiliary leader, and any place there was a need. Retiring from the United States Postal Service in 2013, with over 41 years of dedicated service, Mary Alice served at Severn, Pin-ero, Achilles, Bena, Maryus, Ark, Gloucester, Gloucester Point and Ordinary post offices and called her customers family.
The family would like to thank Dr. Ron Haggerty and his staff and the physicians and staff who tended to Mary Alice at Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center for their special care and compassion.
