Marker dedication to be held for Bethel Rosenwald site

A ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 20, in Gloucester, unveiling and dedicating a sign at the site where Bethel Rosenwald School once stood.
Bethel, sister of Woodville School and one of seven Rosenwald schools in the county, served Gloucester’s Sassafras community’s black students from 1923 to 1951. The public is invited to share in the celebration.
The site is located on Native American Trail, northwest of Bethel Baptist Church (2978 Hickory Fork Road) and immediately past Peasley Middle School.
A shuttle from the church to the site will be provided, beginning at 10:30 a.m.
Following the program, artifacts from the archaeological digs at the school site will be on display in the Bethel Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. The Sassafras Stage Bethel Legacy and Heritage Room and new classrooms will be open for visitation.
For more information about the program, call 804-693-2155.
