Day-to-day views of our hometowns change very little, but the sweep of years brings new buildings and new vistas. On Gloucester’s Main Street, the circa 1800s Ross House, photo above, was demolished in 1968 to make way for a Silco, later Dollar General, discount store. That building, much updated and remodeled for Kelsick Market, which has since moved, now houses several business offices. In Mathews, the post office built in 1958, photo below, stood waiting for new siding in 2004. It had been the end unit of a shopping center demolished for the new Food Lion behind it, which opened in 2003. Because of mold, this post office was demolished and replaced by the present facility in 2005.
