Madeline Ward Smith of Hilton Head, S.C., died peacefully May 30, 2011.
A native of Mathews County, she was born Dec. 28, 1914.
Madeline retired from N.A.S.A. Langley Research Center, Hampton, in 1978. She was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church, Past Matron of Oriental Chapter #30 O.E.S., and a veteran of WWII.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry L. Smith Jr.
She is survived by her son, Leland S. Johnson Jr. of Lexington, Va.; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Wyndham Kidd of Hilton Head; five grandchildren, Stanley Johnson and wife Donna of Tampa, Fla., Lee Johnson of Lexington, Jason Kidd, wife Julia, Kimberly Kidd, Lisa Kidd, all of Colorado; six great-grandchildren, Robert, Diana, and Adam Johnson, all of Tampa; Beckett and Cole Kidd, Madeline Owens, all of Colorado; one sister, Inez Smith of Mobjack.
The family received friends from 7-9 p.m. Sunday in Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home, Mathews, with an Eastern Star service at 6:30 p.m.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in the funeral home chapel. Burial followed in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Middlesex County.
